We will be closing today at 2pm, not because of the snow, but because I have a terrible work ethic.

Shockoe Bottom Coffeehouse Reaches Milestone Anniversary
Woman-owned, indie restaurant GlobeHopper Coffeehouse & Lounge rebuffs economic hardships to reach 5th anniversary
Richmond, VA, On the cusp of the most significant recession since the Great Depression, first time restaurateurs Jenn Crenshaw and Erin Helland had no notion of the economic challenges ahead when they enthusiastically opened their community coffeehouse February 27, 2008. Quietly approaching its fifth anniversary, having outlasted several beloved area businesses, the charming local GlobeHopper Coffeehouse & Lounge is the epitome of perseverance.
Like many small businesses in the last few years, GlobeHopper has been faced with relentless cash-flow challenges. Working without pay, closing retirement accounts, finding angel investors, and continuously negotiating with vendors, the owners have been determined not to let the shop become another victim of the times.
“We altered our mindset – this is our savings investment, this is our family - and we’ll do everything we can to make it,” says co-founder Jenn Crenshaw.
In light of slowly improving economic times, this indie coffee shop is preparing to shift gears from “survival mode” to managing growth.
“I’ve worked in coffee for over 15 years,” says Manager Kimmy Certa. “I love this place and though it isn’t always as easy as we make it look, I’m committed. We are growing fast, and look forward to what the next five years will bring.”
The owners attribute their true success to a solid mission-driven approach of promoting coffee, culture, and community; to the dedication of the staff; to their loyal patrons; and to a burgeoning indie RVA coffee culture. Recognized as a reputable good neighbor, GlobeHopper is locally known for non profit and community involvement, delicious and consistent products, and sincere and attentive baristas.
“There will always be challenges to face,” says co-founder Erin Helland, who describes GlobeHopper as ‘home.’ “And we’ll continue to jokingly compare ourselves to the Little Engine That Could as we overcome each obstacle - declaring relief that the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t the train after all!”
